Situations you can practice in German

Each scene has a character with a personality, a backstory and their own reason to keep talking to you.

Five levels, from your first word to fluent German

Change level mid-conversation. The same character will adjust how fast and how casually they speak.

    Absolute beginner

    Short sentences, the most common words only, and a lot of translation support. Assumes you know nothing.

  2. L2

    Elementary

    Everyday sentences with simple grammar. Enough to order, ask directions and introduce yourself.

  3. L3

    Intermediate

    Natural pace and normal vocabulary. Opinions, small talk and follow-up questions.

  4. L4

    Upper intermediate

    Idioms, contractions and faster turns. The character stops simplifying for you.

  5. L5

    Fluent

    Slang, humour and real speed — how a native actually speaks to another native.

German conversation practice is fully supported in the app. The graded vocabulary course is not available for German yet.

Common questions

Can I really practice German conversation for free?

Yes. Five messages here in your browser with no account. The app then gives you a free daily allowance, and a subscription removes the cap. The German vocabulary lists and charts on this site stay free.

I am a complete beginner in German. Is this too early?

No — set the level to L1. Your partner will use short sentences and the most common words, every line comes with a translation, and Amiko suggests a reply you can send with one tap. You can also type in your own language and see how it should have been said in German.

Will it correct my German?

Yes. When your sentence is off, Amiko shows a better version of what you wrote alongside your original, and explains why. It corrects without stopping the conversation dead.

Can I hear German pronunciation?

Every line the character speaks can be played aloud in a natural voice with real intonation, not a robotic reader.

How is this different from a chatbot like ChatGPT?

A general chatbot will happily talk to you in German, but it will not grade its own difficulty, show you furigana or pinyin, suggest your next line, track vocabulary against exam levels, or stay in character as a barista who is mildly annoyed you are holding up the queue.
