What is Amiko?
Amiko is a language learning app where you learn by roleplay chatting with AI characters — a barista, a classmate, a doctor — in 16 languages. Every line comes with a translation and a real spoken voice, and the conversation is written to your level. “Amiko” means “friend” in Esperanto, which is itself one of the languages you can learn here.
Is Amiko free?
You can practice 5 messages here on the website with no account and no payment. The app includes a free daily allowance, and a subscription removes the limit. All the vocabulary lists, kana charts and Hangul charts on this site are free to use forever.
Which languages can I practice?
Japanese, Korean, English, Spanish, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Dutch, Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian and Esperanto. You can set your own native language separately, so a Korean speaker can learn Japanese with Korean translations.
Do I need to be able to read the writing system?
No. Japanese lines come with furigana and romaji, Korean with romaja, Chinese with pinyin. You can also work through the free Hiragana, Katakana and Hangul charts on this site first — they take a couple of days, not months.
Is this a chatbot or a language course?
Both, deliberately. The conversations are open-ended, so you can say anything. Underneath, the vocabulary is graded to JLPT, TOPIK, HSK and CEFR levels, and there are grammar labs for particles, conjugation, honorifics and measure words.
Can I hear how things are pronounced?
Yes. Every line the character says can be played aloud in a natural voice, and every kana and Hangul letter on this site has a recorded pronunciation you can click.
Does it work for absolute beginners?
Level L1 is written for someone on day one: short sentences, common words, heavy translation support, and a suggested reply you can send with one tap so you are never stuck staring at an empty box.
